New Woodworking Shop-A new home for my Power Tools
Written by admin on July 21, 2009 – 2:47 pm -I am getting a new home for my Power Tools!
We are having a detached garage built which will include space for my new workshop. I am so excited I can’t wait for it to be finished.
Yes it will also house our pick ups but the important thing is, IT WILL BE BIG ENOUGH FOR MY WORKSHOP!
I have been working in a converted horse shelter for years and although It was dry, it was not warm in the winter, large enough to work larger projects or convenient as it is on the back of our property and did not lend itself to lumber storage, tools maintance or a multitude of other drawbacks.
Now I can dream about building decent projects. But first I need to get the layout and effective use of space designed. I am using the information from a previous post to get started, Woodworking Shop Design. One thing I have already discovered, no matter how large the space, it is never large enough. I am moving from a very small space to one that is about 3 times larger but I am still cramped and looking for whys to maximize working space.
I am thinking my way through building a new work bench or using the one I have.

Like most of my tools I received my current work bench from someone who no longer wanted it. It is a very study bench built from angle iron and 2″ x 6″ pine. It has six drawers and a shelf in the middle. The drawers are all very deep and long making it hard to reach to the back and wastes a lot of space with the depth. I found a really neat work bench design in “the family handyman” magazine that would seem to fit the bill nicely but the material costs are pretty high and it would take a while to build. I wouldn’t mind building it but I already have an entertainment center and hutch in the works.
Wouldn’t it be nice to start all over knowing what you know now and with unlimited funds to supply your work shop with all the tools you dream about. Sigh, O well I will just forge ahead and make do with those things I have been blessed with.
I will let you know how my work shop plans progress. I hope something I find or suggest will help you with your project.
